Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
