The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
