Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
