Earth could be facing challenges, but optimism persists. A fresh honor originating at the science, music and arts festival Starmus will inspire people to take action.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in honour of the celebrated scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It seeks to acknowledge those who champion the natural world.

The Medal's Framework

The inaugural winners are slated for announcement during the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from 17–22 October next year.

It was shared that Jane Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had backed the medal's establishment. “The vision behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. And I think because of the unique connection she shared with us.”

“This medal will recognize enduring projects carried out to build an environment improved for all living beings and ecosystems and offer support for the continuation such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus indicated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably include several divisions.

“The intent is for it to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award honoring scientific outreach that we created exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Sharing thoughts about the future for Earth, a prominent voice remarked, “Honestly, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. The current political climate globally is conducting a dismissal of evidence. So this undermines global initiatives.”

“Realistically, the prospects aren't very good which means we need to begin to reflecting, much more seriously about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not just global warming, but also the whole way in which we interact with the natural world.”

Following an Example

As a result, observers believe it was a good time to emulate her guiding principles. “I think that in bestowing the prize, we will be considering this essential spirit that Jane embodied – that was her priority, to transform the way we treat the other animals with which we share the planet.”

A pressing concern currently is the proliferation of false information. The focus of the upcoming festival will be “the search for truth”.

“We realised that factual reality is becoming a matter of debate when politics are involved. This is a very dangerous thing,” he commented. “The science of climate is a science; you cannot allow interference from politics in climate science.”

Optimism and Resolve

The goal remains that this honor will inspire positive change. “The purpose is motivating others to participate and to care and to strive toward these goals, truly. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we have to look at working our utmost,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, yet we must have to work to achieve positive outcomes.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection expressed optimism that “with guidance and once enabled, humanity can be diligent stewards of our planet”, pointing to the initiatives of an institute which, in addition to its projects, helps young people get involved with their community, animals, and environment.

“As my late grandmother constantly told everyone, the choices we make each day have an impact and it is up to us what type of impact we make,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about beneficial initiatives that people are making.”
